STEP 4 OF 10

I’ve Chosen to Follow Jesus. Now What?

Choosing to follow Jesus is the beginning of a new life, not the end of the journey. New believers sometimes expect everything to change immediately. Some things may change quickly. Other habits, questions, wounds, and patterns may take time. Christian growth is a process of learning to trust and obey God.

1. You Have a New Life

The New Testament describes believers as new creations and as people who have been brought from spiritual death to life. Your identity is no longer defined only by your past. You now belong to Christ.

That does not mean you instantly become mature. A newborn baby is fully alive but still has a lot of growing to do. In the same way, spiritual life is real from the beginning, and growth follows over time.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17   NLT | KJV
  • Colossians 3:1–4   NLT | KJV
  • 1 Peter 2:2   NLT | KJV

2. Growth Doesn’t Happen Overnight

You may still struggle with old habits, anger, fear, temptation, doubt, or unhealthy thinking. Do not confuse “I still need to grow” with “nothing has changed.” God often transforms us through repeated choices, correction, prayer, Scripture, community, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

Spiritual maturity is not measured by how religious you sound. It shows up in character—love, patience, honesty, humility, self-control, mercy, faithfulness, and obedience.

  • 2 Peter 3:18   NLT | KJV
  • Galatians 5:22–23   NLT | KJV

3. What Happens When I Sin or Fail?

Becoming a Christian does not mean you will never sin again. The difference is that sin is no longer something you make peace with. When you fail, bring it into the light. Confess it to God. Receive His forgiveness. Make things right where you can. Learn from what happened and keep following Jesus.

Shame says, “Hide from God.” Grace teaches us to come back to Him. Conviction points us toward repentance and restoration.

  • 1 John 1:8–9   NLT | KJV
  • Proverbs 28:13   NLT | KJV
  • Hebrews 4:14–16   NLT | KJV

4. Build a Relationship With God

Relationships grow through time, attention, trust, and communication. Your relationship with God grows in similar ways. Spend time with Him, learn His Word, speak honestly in prayer, and practice obedience.

Do not turn these practices into a scoreboard. Missing a day of Bible reading does not make God stop loving you. Spiritual habits are not a way to earn God’s love; they are ways of making room to know the God who already loves you.

5. Pray

Prayer is one of the simplest ways to begin walking with God. Talk to Him about your day, your questions, your temptations, the people you care about, and the things you are thankful for. Ask for wisdom and help.

You will learn more about prayer in Step 5. For now, begin with honesty. God is not impressed by complicated vocabulary.

6. Read God’s Word

The Bible helps you learn who God is, what He has done, how He sees the world, and how He calls His people to live. Begin with a Gospel such as John, then continue learning the wider story of Scripture.

Do not panic when you find something difficult. Ask questions, look at the context, compare passages, and learn from trustworthy teachers. Step 6 will help you build a simple Bible-reading approach.

📖 Read in the Bible

  • Psalm 119:105   NLT | KJV
  • 2 Timothy 3:16–17   NLT | KJV

7. Obey Jesus

Christian growth is not only learning more information. Jesus connected love for Him with obedience. When Scripture makes something clear, practice it. Forgive. Tell the truth. Turn from sexual immorality. Be generous. Love your neighbor. Make peace. Use your words wisely. Care for people in need.

Obedience is not how we buy salvation. It is a response to grace and a way our faith becomes visible in everyday life.

8. The Holy Spirit Transforms Us

You are not expected to transform yourself by willpower alone. God gives believers the Holy Spirit. The Spirit teaches, convicts, guides, strengthens, and produces Christlike character in us.

You will learn much more about the Holy Spirit in Step 7. For now, know this: Christian growth is cooperation with God’s work in you.

📖 Read in the Bible

  • Romans 8:13–14   NLT | KJV
  • Galatians 5:16   NLT | KJV
  • Philippians 2:12–13   NLT | KJV

9. What About Doubts?

Questions do not automatically mean you have no faith. Many believers go through seasons of uncertainty. Instead of hiding your questions, bring them into the light. Pray honestly. Study Scripture. Ask mature Christians. Give yourself time to learn.

There is a difference between asking honest questions and deciding that no answer could ever be enough. A teachable heart remains willing to follow truth wherever it leads.

10. Don’t Follow Jesus Completely Alone

Christianity is personal, but it is not meant to be isolated. We need other believers to teach, encourage, correct, pray, serve, and walk with us. A healthy church does not replace your relationship with God; it supports your growth in that relationship.

If you have had a bad church experience, this may take time. Step 8 will talk more honestly about church, healthy leadership, and church hurt.

📖 Read in the Bible

  • Hebrews 10:24–25   NLT | KJV
  • Ecclesiastes 4:9–10   NLT | KJV

Your Next Steps

You do not have to do everything at once. Begin with a few simple practices and allow your relationship with God to develop over time.

  • Talk honestly with God each day.
  • Read a small portion of the Bible regularly.
  • Practice what God is teaching you.
  • Ask questions when you do not understand.
  • Connect with mature Christians and a healthy church.
  • When you stumble, turn back to God and keep going.

A Prayer for Your New Walk

Father, thank You for calling me to follow Jesus. Help me to know You, trust You, and obey You one day at a time. Teach me through Your Word and guide me by Your Spirit. Give me strength when I am tempted, wisdom when I am uncertain, and courage when following You is difficult. Lead me to mature Christians who will encourage me and help me grow. Thank You for Your patience, mercy, and faithful love. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Remember

Following Jesus is a lifelong journey. You will continue to learn, change, and mature. Do not become discouraged when growth feels slow or when you make mistakes. Keep turning toward God, trusting His grace, and taking your next faithful step.
