STEP 7 OF 10
WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?
The Holy Spirit is sometimes the least understood Person of the Trinity. Some people think of the Spirit as an emotion, an energy, or a mysterious force. The Bible presents the Holy Spirit as Godโpersonal, active, holy, and present with believers.
1. The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is not merely a power that God sends. Scripture speaks of the Spirit teaching, guiding, speaking, being grieved, giving gifts, and working in people. The King James Version often uses the phrase โHoly Ghostโ; it refers to the same Holy Spirit.
2. The Trinity
Christians believe there is one God who eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is called the Trinity. Christianity does not teach that there are three gods. It also does not teach that Father, Son, and Spirit are simply three temporary masks worn by one Person.
The Trinity is difficult to explain completely because God is greater than our categories. We should be careful with simple illustrations that create more confusion than clarity. The Bible gives us the pattern: one God, and Father, Son, and Spirit each revealed as divine and personal.
3. Jesus Promised the Holy Spirit
Before His death, Jesus told His disciples that the Father would send the Holy Spirit to teach, remind, guide, and remain with them. After Jesus rose, He told them to wait for the Spiritโs power before carrying the gospel outward.
4. How Do I Receive the Holy Spirit?
The New Testament connects the gift of the Holy Spirit with belonging to Christ. Faith means more than believing Jesus existed. It means receiving the gospelโtrusting that Jesus died for our sins, rose again, and is Lordโand turning to Him.
We do not become good enough to earn the Holy Spirit. God saves us through Christ and gives His Spirit to those who belong to Him. Receiving the Spirit also does not mean instant maturity or perfect behavior.
A Foundation to Remember
Salvation comes first. Growth follows.
We do not change ourselves enough to receive God. God saves us through Christ, gives us His Spirit, and then begins transforming us from within.
5. The Holy Spirit Lives Within Believers
One of the remarkable claims of the New Testament is that Godโs Spirit dwells in believers. This means Christianity is not only following rules from the outside. God is at work within His people.
The Spiritโs presence should lead us toward holiness, not spiritual pride. If Godโs Spirit lives in us, our bodies, choices, relationships, and habits matter.
6. What Does the Holy Spirit Do?
The Spirit glorifies Jesus, teaches truth, strengthens believers, helps us pray, gives power to witness, produces character, and gives gifts for serving others. His work is not mainly about making us look spiritually impressive. It is about forming Christ in us and equipping the church.
7. Conviction
Conviction is the Spiritโs work of making us aware of sin and drawing us toward repentance. Conviction is different from hopeless condemnation. Condemnation says, โYou are beyond hope.โ Conviction says, โThis is wrong; bring it to God and turn from it.โ
A sensitive conscience is valuable, but not every guilty feeling comes from God. Some people carry false guilt for things God has forgiven or for things that were never sinful. Scripture helps us test our feelings.
8. Guidance and Discernment
The Holy Spirit guides believers, but discernment matters. We should not assume every strong feeling is the Spirit. Test what you believe you are hearing. Does it agree with Scripture? Does it reflect the character of Jesus? Does it lead toward truth, love, holiness, courage, and obedience?
Wise Christian counsel can also help, especially with major decisions. God does not need to make us reckless in order to make us faithful.
9. Walking in the Spirit
To walk in the Spirit means living day by day under His influence rather than being ruled by sinful desires. It involves repeated choices: saying no to what pulls us away from God and yes to what honors Christ.
Walking in the Spirit is not a one-time emotional experience. It is a lifestyle of dependence and obedience.
10. The Fruit of the Spirit
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities describe the kind of character the Spirit grows in believers.
Fruit usually grows slowly. You may notice progress by looking back over months or years rather than hours. Ask God not only for spiritual experiences, but for spiritual character.
11. Spiritual Gifts
The Spirit also gives gifts so believers can serve others. The New Testament lists gifts such as teaching, serving, encouragement, generosity, leadership, mercy, wisdom, faith, and others. Christians differ in how they understand some gifts today, but the central principle is clear: gifts are given for service, not status.
12. Gifts Without Love
The church in Corinth had spiritual gifts, but Paul warned that gifts without love are empty. Being gifted does not automatically mean being mature. Character matters.
Never use a spiritual gift, title, platform, or claim of revelation to control people. The Spirit of God does not excuse pride, manipulation, dishonesty, or abuse.
13. Being Filled With the Spirit
The New Testament tells believers to be filled with the Spirit. This points to ongoing surrender and dependence, not simply a past event we remember. We continually need Godโs Spirit to shape our worship, relationships, choices, and witness.
14. Can We Grieve or Resist the Spirit?
Yes. Scripture warns believers not to grieve the Holy Spirit and warns people not to resist Godโs work. Persistent disobedience, bitterness, lying, and hardened attitudes are serious because they oppose what the Spirit is doing in us.
15. Transformation
The goal is not merely to have spiritual moments. The Spirit transforms us to become more like Christ. That transformation touches our thoughts, desires, speech, relationships, priorities, and habits.
You cooperate by staying close to Christ, reading Scripture, praying, obeying, confessing sin, and participating in Christian community. The power comes from God, but you are not passive.
7-Day Walk in the Spirit Challenge
- Each morning ask: โHoly Spirit, help me honor Jesus today.โ
- Choose one fruit of the Spirit to focus on each day.
- Before one difficult conversation, pause and ask for wisdom and self-control.
- At night, review the day: Where did I sense conviction? Where did I obey? Where do I need to repent?
Take a Moment
Before moving on, sit quietly for a minute. Think about what stood out to you. You do not have to understand everything at once. Growth often begins with one truth that you are willing to keep thinking about and living out.
Prayer
A Simple Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank You for dwelling in those who belong to Christ. Teach me truth, convict me when I am wrong, grow the character of Jesus in me, and give me wisdom to recognize Your guidance. Help me use whatever gifts You give me to serve, not to impress. Amen.
Remember
Keep This With You
The Holy Spirit is God, not merely a feeling or force. He lives in believers, produces Christlike character, gives gifts for service, and guides us in ways that agree with Scripture and honor Jesus.
