10. How Do I Live My Faith in Real Life?

STEP 10 OF 10

Following Jesus Beyond Sunday

Faith is not meant to stay inside a church service, Bible study, or prayer time. Following Jesus touches ordinary life—friendships, family, dating, school, work, money, entertainment, social media, decisions, temptation, and the way we treat people who do not believe what we believe.

1. Following Jesus Is a Daily Choice

Jesus spoke about taking up our cross and following Him. Christian life includes daily surrender. Some choices are dramatic, but many are ordinary: what we say when we are angry, what we watch when no one is around, how we treat someone who cannot benefit us, whether we tell the truth when lying would be easier.

📖 Read in the Bible

Luke 9:23 NLT | KJV
Colossians 3:17 NLT | KJV

2. Let God Transform the Way You Think

Our choices begin with our thinking. Culture, family, friends, algorithms, past experiences, and personal desires all influence us. Scripture calls believers to let God renew their minds rather than simply copying the patterns around them.

Ask yourself not only, “Is everyone doing this?” but “Does this fit who Jesus is forming me to become?”

📖 Read in the Bible

Romans 12:1–2 NLT | KJV
Philippians 4:8 NLT | KJV

3. How You Treat People Matters

Jesus connected love for God with love for people. Christian character shows in patience, kindness, truthfulness, mercy, respect, and justice. How we treat people when we disagree with them matters just as much as how we treat people who make life easy for us.

📖 Read in the Bible

Matthew 22:37–40 NLT | KJV
John 13:34–35 NLT | KJV
Micah 6:8 NLT | KJV

4. Friendships

Friends influence our habits, attitudes, and direction. This does not mean Christians should avoid everyone who believes differently. Jesus interacted with many kinds of people. But your closest relationships should not constantly pull you away from truth, wisdom, and obedience.

A healthy friendship includes honesty, respect, boundaries, encouragement, and room to grow. You should not have to betray your convictions to keep a friend.

📖 Read in the Bible

Proverbs 13:20 NLT | KJV
1 Corinthians 15:33 NLT | KJV
Proverbs 17:17 NLT | KJV

5. Dating and Relationships

Dating can bring joy, excitement, pressure, and confusion. Ask more than whether you are attracted to someone. Pay attention to character. Are they honest? Respectful? Self-controlled? Kind? Do they respect your boundaries and your faith?

A relationship that regularly pressures you to disobey God, hide things, accept disrespect, or ignore serious warning signs is not made healthy simply because strong feelings are present.

Do not confuse control, jealousy, threats, sexual pressure, or isolation with love. Love does not require you to become unsafe.

📖 Read in the Bible

1 Corinthians 13:4–7 NLT | KJV
2 Timothy 2:22 NLT | KJV
1 Thessalonians 4:3–5 NLT | KJV

6. Family

Family relationships can be loving, complicated, or painful. Scripture calls believers to honor parents, care for family, forgive, and pursue peace—but those commands should not be twisted to excuse abuse or remove wise boundaries.

Sometimes following Jesus may create tension when family members do not share your faith. Speak with humility, avoid unnecessary arguments, and let your character support your words.

📖 Read in the Bible

Ephesians 6:1–4 NLT | KJV
Romans 12:18 NLT | KJV
1 Peter 3:15–16 NLT | KJV

7. School, College, and Work

Faith affects how you study and work. Christians should be honest, dependable, respectful, and willing to do good work even when no one is watching. Cheating, plagiarism, stealing time, gossip, and dishonesty do not become acceptable simply because “everyone does it.”

Your school or job may not be your final calling, but it is still a place where your character matters.

📖 Read in the Bible

Colossians 3:23–24 NLT | KJV
Proverbs 11:1 NLT | KJV
Titus 2:7–8 NLT | KJV

8. Social Media and the Internet

Online life is real life. What you post, share, comment on, watch, and send affects you and other people. Social media can connect, teach, and encourage—but it can also feed comparison, anger, lust, envy, dishonesty, and constant distraction.

Before posting, ask: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Am I trying to help, impress, embarrass, provoke, or get attention?

Also protect your privacy and safety. Not everyone online is who they claim to be.

📖 Read in the Bible

Ephesians 4:29 NLT | KJV
James 1:19–20 NLT | KJV
Philippians 4:8 NLT | KJV

9. Entertainment

Christians may make different choices about music, movies, games, books, and entertainment. Instead of relying only on a list of forbidden titles, learn to evaluate what something is doing to you.

A Helpful Question

“Is this helping or harming the person I am becoming?”

Does it feed lust, cruelty, fear, bitterness, greed, or obsession? Does it dull your conscience? Does it take over time and attention that belong elsewhere? Not everything that is permitted is wise or helpful.

📖 Read in the Bible

1 Corinthians 6:12 NLT | KJV
1 Corinthians 10:23 NLT | KJV
Psalm 101:3 NLT | KJV

10. Money

Money is a tool, but it can easily become a master. Jesus spoke often about money because it reveals what we value. Learn generosity, honesty, contentment, and wise stewardship.

You do not have to be wealthy before generosity matters. Giving can include money, time, skills, hospitality, and practical care.

📖 Read in the Bible

Matthew 6:19–24 NLT | KJV
1 Timothy 6:6–10 NLT | KJV
2 Corinthians 9:6–8 NLT | KJV

11. Temptation

Temptation is not the same as sin. Jesus was tempted but did not sin. Temptation becomes dangerous when we entertain it, make room for it, and choose it.

Do not rely only on willpower. Learn your triggers. Remove easy access when necessary. Ask for accountability. Replace harmful habits with better ones. Pray early, not only after you have already decided to give in.

📖 Read in the Bible

1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT | KJV
James 1:13–15 NLT | KJV
Matthew 26:41 NLT | KJV

12. When You Fail

Failure does not have to become your identity. When you sin, confess it, receive God’s forgiveness, make things right where possible, and learn from what happened. If the same pattern keeps returning, get practical help instead of repeating vague promises to “try harder.”

Sometimes you need accountability, counseling, a changed environment, or a stronger plan. Grace does not make growth passive.

📖 Read in the Bible

1 John 1:9 NLT | KJV
Proverbs 24:16 NLT | KJV
Hebrews 12:1–2 NLT | KJV

13. Making Difficult Decisions

Not every decision has one Bible verse that tells you exactly what to do. When Scripture does not give a direct command, use wisdom. Ask: Is this morally consistent with Scripture? What are my motives? What are the likely consequences? What do wise people see that I may be missing?

Pray for guidance, but do not wait forever for a dramatic sign when God has already given you enough wisdom to make a responsible choice.

📖 Read in the Bible

James 1:5 NLT | KJV
Proverbs 15:22 NLT | KJV
Colossians 3:15–17 NLT | KJV

14. Purpose and Calling

Many people ask, “What is God’s purpose for my life?” Part of the answer is already clear for every believer: love God, love people, become like Christ, do good, share the gospel, and use what God has given you faithfully.

Your specific calling may involve a career, ministry, family role, creative work, service, leadership, or other responsibilities. You may discover it gradually rather than through one dramatic moment.

📖 Read in the Bible

Ephesians 2:10 NLT | KJV
Micah 6:8 NLT | KJV
Matthew 22:37–40 NLT | KJV

15. How Should I Treat People Who Don’t Believe?

Christians are called to share their faith, but not to treat unbelievers as enemies. Every person has dignity. Listen. Be respectful. Answer questions honestly. Do not manipulate, mock, or pressure people.

You can believe Jesus is the only way to the Father and still speak with gentleness, humility, and love. Truth does not need cruelty to make it strong.

📖 Read in the Bible

1 Peter 3:15–16 NLT | KJV
Colossians 4:5–6 NLT | KJV
2 Timothy 2:24–25 NLT | KJV

16. Let Your Light Shine

Jesus called His followers the light of the world. Light is meant to be seen, but it does not need to shout about itself. A faithful life can make the gospel visible through integrity, compassion, courage, forgiveness, generosity, and hope.

Good works do not save us, but they can point people toward the God who saved us.

📖 Read in the Bible

Matthew 5:14–16 NLT | KJV
Titus 2:10 NLT | KJV

17. Keep Growing

You have reached Step 10, but you have not reached the end of Christian growth. Keep learning. Keep praying. Keep reading Scripture. Keep gathering with healthy believers. Keep serving. Keep confessing sin and receiving grace. Keep becoming more like Jesus.

There will be strong seasons and difficult seasons. Faithfulness is not measured by never struggling. It is measured by continuing to return to Christ and walk with Him.

Hebrews 12:1–3 NLT | KJV
