Trust God, Not Yourself: Proverbs 3 Devotional

October 21, 2026

SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 3

Read Proverbs 3: NLT | KJV

Main Idea

Proverbs 3 teaches us to trust God with our whole heart instead of leaning on our own understanding. When we honor Him and hold on to His wisdom, He directs our steps and gives us peace, safety, and favor.

Some Key Points from Proverbs 3

  1. Hold on to God’s teaching (vv. 1–4). When God’s ways are written on our hearts, they show in how we treat people, and we find favor with God and others.
  2. Trust God, not yourself (vv. 5–6). We are invited to bring God into every decision, not just the big ones.
  3. Don’t be wise in your own eyes (vv. 7–8). Humility and turning from evil bring health and strength.
  4. Honor God first (vv. 9–10). Giving God the firstfruits of our increase is a way of saying that everything we have comes from Him.
  5. Correction is a sign of love (vv. 11–12). God’s discipline is not rejection. It is a Father shaping a child He delights in.
  6. Wisdom is worth more than riches (vv. 13–18). Wisdom brings peace, honor, and a life that cannot be measured by money.
  7. Wisdom builds the world (vv. 19–20). God made the earth and heavens by wisdom. Living wisely means applying God’s truth to our daily words, choices, and relationships.
  8. Walk in peace, without fear (vv. 21–26). When we live wisely and trust God, we do not have to stay awake in fear. We can rest in His care.
  9. Be good to your neighbor (vv. 27–32). Do not hold back good when it is in your power to help. Do not plot against, quarrel with, or envy others.
  10. Grace for the humble (vv. 33–35). The Lord blesses the home of the just and gives grace to the lowly.

What This Means for Today

We need to be careful of the “follow your heart” and “trust yourself” culture. Our feelings and instincts matter, but they are not the final word. Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us to trust God with all our heart and bring every decision to Him, so He can direct our paths.

When we acknowledge God in all our ways, we do not have to carry every choice alone. He promises to direct our paths.

Fear and sleepless nights. Verses 24–26 remind us that we can lie down in peace and place our confidence in the Lord, even when the world feels unsettled.

Correction. We tend to resist being corrected. This chapter reminds us that God corrects those He loves, and so do people who genuinely care about us.

Success measured by money. Wisdom is worth more than silver, gold, and rubies. What lasts is peace, character, and a good name.

Kindness to neighbors. Do not put off doing good for someone when it is in your power to help today.

Trust God with all your heart, and let Him direct your path.

Putting It Into Practice

Today, choose one decision, worry, or situation you have been carrying alone. Bring it to God in prayer and ask Him to direct your path. Then look for one way to do good for someone today when it is in your power to help.

A Prayer for Today

Father God, thank You this morning for Your goodness, mercy, and grace. Thank You that we do not have to figure life out on our own.

Forgive us for the times we leaned on our own understanding and were wise in our own eyes. Today we choose to trust You with all our hearts. In all our ways, we acknowledge You. Direct our paths, Lord.

Write Your mercy and truth on our hearts. Help us receive Your correction as a sign of Your love, and help us honor You first in everything we have.

Give us Your wisdom, which is worth more than silver and gold. Let us walk without fear, lie down in peace, and rest in the confidence that You keep our feet from stumbling.

Help us be good to our neighbors and quick to do good when it is in our power. Give us humble hearts, and pour out Your grace on us.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
